About the event

Farthing Common 11 mile walk
Our first walk of British Summer Time, is an 11 mile walk starting from Farthing Common, and it is most definitely one of the walk leaders favourites. The Ashford Group last did this circuit of the Kent Downs in September 2024, so it is about time we slid it into the walk programme for 2026, you won't want to miss it.

There will be good views, well hopefully if the weather is good, a climb or two or three, as all good walks deserve this, plus of course the obligatory pub en route!

The highlights of this wonderful yomp are the stretches along the North Downs Way, where the route heads along the crest of the ridge, giving us extensive views over the countryside. The lesser known paths are also enjoyable and offer the chance to explore woodland and field paths, whilst we also visit the remote church at Hastingleigh, which nestles neatly in the valley.

On leaving the the car park on Stone Street, we head towards Skeete then along to Hemsted and into West Wood, before crossing the busy road to the small hamlet of Lymbridge Green. From there we make our way to Whatsole Street, before our lunch stop at Hastingleigh church.

From the church, we soon join the North Downs Way National Trail, which we follow past Coombe Farm Trig Point and into Stowting for a drinks stop at the Tiger Inn.

There are many lovely climbs along the route but the "piece de resistance" comes in the latter stages, with the ascent of Cobbs Hill. There will no doubt be much heavy breathing as we head uphill, but it is all worth the effort though, as the views are great at the top. All that remains is to rejoin the outward route, back to the car park at Farthing Common to reach the finish line.

Dogs welcome, but on a short lead when required.

Difficulty: Moderate
Ascent: 1100ft

Starting point - The car park at Farthing Common is located at the top of the hill on the B2068, Stone Street.
Nearest postcode: CT18 8DH

Walk leader is Kevin Hall
