Archaeology Day

In celebration of the 2019 Florida Archaeology Month, "Making Collections Accessible," and the 90th anniversary of Miami-Dade Parks, the Deering Estate will host its 7th annual Archaeology Day on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Programs for the entire family include a variety of hands-on activities and walking tours of the Estate's unique natural areas. General admission for adults is reduced to $10 and children (ages 4-14) $7.

Every March, statewide programs and events celebrating Florida Archaeology Month are designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida's rich cultural heritage. This year's theme is dedicated to giving the general public access to historical information and artifacts.

Florida Archaeology Month is coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, and supported by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Additional sponsors for 2019 include the Florida Archaeological Council, Florida Public Archaeology Network, state and local museums, historical commissions, libraries, and public and private school systems.

The program schedule for the 2019 Archaeology Day at the Deering Estate:

"A Trail into the Past" from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Walk down to the historic Boat Basin and learn about South Florida’s past through fun, hands-on activities like an ancient scavenger hunt, excavating chocolate chips, and more! Participants will be able to see real artifacts and learn about other archaeological sites from experts. Food and drink vendors will be available.

Historic House Tour: 10:30 a.m. & 3 p.m.
Join our Interpretive Staff on a guided tour to hear the amazing history of the Richmond Cottage, the first hotel between Coconut Grove and Key West, and the Stone House, a tiny piece of Deering's beloved Barcelona recreated on Biscayne Bay. (45 minutes)

Kid's Archaeological Adventure: 11:30 a.m. & 2 p.m.
Children will discover how Archaeologists investigate ancient life by uncovering artifacts and eco-facts in our demonstration archaeological site. They will use their scientific and critical thinking skills to determine how these artifacts were made and what they were used for. (30 minutes)

"Sunken Ships and Submerged Sites: Underwater Archaeology at the University of Miami" Talk: 12 p.m.
Join Dr. Fritz Hanselmann, underwater archaeologist and professor at the University of Miami, as he presents his latest expeditions and research projects from submerged prehistoric sites and underwater caves, to shipwrecks in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. (30 minutes)

Tequesta Walking Tour: 12:30 p.m.
Go on a walking tour of the Estate's natural areas by using the Tequesta ancient footpath. Participants will learn about the Tequesta civilization that roamed our site thousands of years ago. (1.5 hours)

"From the Ground Up to the Display Case — the Lifespan of an Artifact" Talk: 2:30 p.m.
Join Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) as they explain what types of things people in Florida were using 10,000 years ago to the present and find out what happens to artifacts after they are collected from an excavation site. (30 minutes)
