- **Event Description**: The Barker family is facing another heartbreaking chapter with Alzheimer’s, but this time it isn’t a parent—it’s Joe’s loving wife, Lisa. At just 59 years old, Lisa is a devoted mother of four, a grandmother to three little ones, and a deeply cherished daughter and sister. For most of her life, Lisa poured her heart into being a nurturing and thoughtful mom, raising four exceptional children with unwavering love while working part-time to help support her growing family. As her children became parents themselves, Lisa continued that same devotion by caring for her grandchildren and offering daily, loving support as her daughter stepped into motherhood.

Joe fell in love with Lisa the very first time they met in 1988 at St. Luke West Hospital—he was working in the emergency department, and she was in medical records. That moment was the beginning of a life they would build side by side. This year marks 36 years of marriage—36 years of choosing one another, supporting one another, and creating a family grounded in love and commitment. Like any couple, they’ve weathered their share of ups and downs, but through every challenge and every season, they stayed the course together.

Lisa’s symptoms began showing about two years ago, right as Joe’s family was already enduring one tragedy after another with their parents, including their father’s own battle with Alzheimer’s. Early‑onset Alzheimer’s places an enormous emotional and physical strain on families, especially on the primary caregiver. Lisa is now in the later stages of the disease, and her daily life has changed in profound ways. She often forgets her children’s names, struggles to recognize the people closest to her, and needs constant help with basic tasks like bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom. Anxiety, restlessness, and moments of paranoia have become part of her day, along with sleep disturbances and wandering.

For Joe, caring for Lisa means staying constantly alert—making sure she’s safe, managing every behavior, and guiding her through each moment of the day. He does all of this while working full‑time to continue providing for his family. Despite the weight he carries, Joe has always been someone who gives of himself without hesitation. His life of service began as a teenager volunteering with the Erlanger Fire Department, then becoming a paramedic, moving on to become a nurse in the emergency room, and now supporting the medical field on the IT side, maintaining and improving the systems that hospitals and doctors rely on to care for their patients. Helping others has always been at the core of who he is, whether through medical care, a steady hand, or a listening ear. He is an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.

Joe and Lisa’s four children and three grandchildren are their greatest joy, and their youngest daughter will graduate from Boone County High School this year. Their family has been blessed with love and support from relatives and close friends, but the financial reality of Lisa’s care has become overwhelming. Medications, daily needs, and especially future memory‑care placement—costing around $18,500 per month and not covered by insurance—are far beyond what they can manage alone. Asking for help does not come easily to this family, but the time has come to reach out with open hearts.

Financial support will help ensure that Lisa receives the compassionate, specialized care she deserves. It will allow her family to focus on making meaningful memories instead of being consumed by stress and worry. And it will give Joe the ability to make the best decisions for Lisa’s daily comfort, safety, and dignity.
