‘On teaching Contact Improvisation’
Contact Improvisation carries a history. It was born from experimentation, from questioning form, from listening to gravity and to each other. And yet it is not a fixed inheritance. It keeps changing as we change.
Around fifty years ago, CI emerged as a new dance form that disrupted many established assumptions about what dance could be. It challenged hierarchies, roles, aesthetics, and ways of learning. It was consciously kept open — without a single definition, without one official method, without a formal institution claiming ownership.
A practice shaped by many voices, many bodies, many approaches.
In this gathering, we approach teaching as a living practice. As a European exchange between CI teachers, we turn our attention toward the act of transmitting itself. What are we passing on when we teach Contact Improvisation today? A technique? A set of skills? A lineage? A way of relating? And how consciously do we engage with these choices?
Through embodied research and shared reflection, we will explore how knowledge moves in the room — through touch, timing, language, attention. Teaching becomes not only the delivery of tools, but the creation of conditions to learn.
If CI is rooted in inquiry, experimentation, and dialogue, how do these qualities appear in our pedagogy? How often do we question the way we teach, and the values embedded in our methods?
As the world is shifting, our ways of transmitting maybe must shift too. Rather than offering answers, we would like to open questions together — about teaching, about continuity and change, and about how the way we teach already participates in shaping the future of this practice.
