Rx Kids Flint is hosting its second Baby Parade from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, July 25, on the Applewood Campus in the Flint Cultural Center. The event will celebrate the the continued impact of Rx Kids on Flint families and babies.
The event will include family-friendly games and activities, ice cream from the Michigan State University Dairy Store, music, short remarks from Rx Kids leadership and local dignitaries, and culminating with a parade – all to celebrate Flint babies, moms, and families.
In 1918, the United States government recognized ‘Children’s Year,’ an effort to “save 100,000 babies” by addressing issues that impact child welfare, including a lack of data on maternal and child health, the effects of poverty on health, lack of educational resources, and a lack of safe spaces for children to play.
A visual way that advocates for child and maternal health raised awareness of these issues across the country was by hosting “baby parades,” which celebrated and showcased the lives and activities of healthy kids in their communities.
Just a little over a century later, Rx Kids was launched in January 2024 to address many of the same issues the Children’s Year hoped to bring awareness to. Rx Kids hosted its first baby parade in Flint in the summer of 2024, and plans to make baby parades an annual tradition in all Rx Kids communities.
