April 12 - Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), 125 minutes, directed by Ang Lee, starring Sihung Lung and Chien-Lien Wu.
Ang Lee’s affectionate, insightful and funny tale of a Taiwanese family casts a warm glow. Master chef Zhu is raising three motherless daughters, all on the brink of independent adulthood. Family ritual has the four of them gathering on Sunday night as Zhu prepares a sumptuous meal. One by one the daughters use the dinners as opportunities to make important announcements, and the family is transformed. Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi) keeps the complex family dynamics in clear view, and by the film’s conclusion, we know more and care deeply about Zhu and his daughters.
