Flint City Bucks superstar and USL Player of the Year Donavan “Gusto” Phillip scored in the NCAA Tournament semifinal Friday to propel No. 15 seed NC State University to its first ever national championship match.

The NC State Wolfpack defeated Saint Louis University 2-1 in the semis, with Phillip rising at the back post in the 69th minute to break the deadlock with a headed missile across the face of goal.

With that crucial (and eerily familiar) tally, Phillip now shares the lead for total goals scored in the nation—on the heels of earning USL League Two Golden Boot with the Bucks.

Before the match, Phillip was named to the NCAA All-American first team. He and Palmer Ault (Bucks 2023, 2024) remain in contention for the MAC Hermann Trophy for best college player in the country.
