About the event

Poetry on the Lawn: A Tri-Monthly Generative Poetry Workshop w/ Katie King
Write in community! Sponsored by the Northern Arizona Book Festival, local poets and writers will teach an accessible poetry workshop on the lawn of the Downtown Flagstaff-Coconino Public Library! Each workshop focuses on a topic or form and challenges you to write on the spot in community with other writers. Please bring a blanket or folding chair to sit on, writing materials, and yourself! There is no age limit and we welcome all writers at any level.

August 24th:

"Lasso the Wild Mind: Poems for the Fractured and Ferocious"
When the mind fractures—through grief, fear, or overstimulation—poetry can slip through the cracks, as we don't even know who we are in these shifting states, let alone how to write about ourselves in them. We’ll lean into the fracture of bewilderment instead of fighting it. We’ll study poets who have used nature as a lasso to the consciousness (and how that consciousness is going extinct) and how we can breathe into the unknown, while still placing ourselves poetically on earth.

Drawing on the idea that what is small can be significant and effectively portray a drifting consciousness, we'll deconstruct conscious identity to its bare core using simple language discovery. We'll explore how somatic (body-based) and biophilic (earth-based) imagery can map emotional landscapes when logic can’t.

How simple sentences and concrete sensory details can re-anchor fractured consciousness.

How poems can act as maps through dissociation, flux, and emotional collapse.

How to build presence on the page without needing narrative or "solutions."

Leave with 2–3 raw, living drafts and a few lasso techniques.

I want to invite Poets, dreamers, punks, dissociators, and anyone who feels like their mind is weather-beaten but still worth saving.
