NOLI 2-Day Wilderness Navigation with Map & Compass with Scott Fisher - Mar 28-29, Rocky Fork State Park, TN
Do your adventures take you to remote areas where all you have are your own wits and training to rely on? Or do you prefer to keep your adventures closer to home by heading to your favorite local trail? In either case wilderness navigation skills will greatly enrich your experience by giving you the confidence to successfully head into the backcountry and return home safely. Our comprehensive and fun two-day map reading and compass class, held at Rocky Fork State Park in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, goes into greater detail on navigational terms and techniques and provides participants with greater opportunity to develop the skills and proficiency that only come with time in the saddle. Wilderness navigation takes practice and with this class you will not only learn additional skills in the classroom but will get to apply them more broadly in the field.
Day one will be spent at our riverside outpost learning how to read and use a map and compass before progressing to terrain association, navigational techniques and route selection. After completing the classroom and hands-on exercises we will move to a trail close by in the afternoon to apply your new skills during a mild to moderate hike (~2 miles out and back).
On day two we will build on the foundation you developed during the first day and focus largely on route planning and terrain association where you will get ample opportunity to practice your skills both on and off-trail and become increasingly proficient in understanding your surroundings, pinpointing your location and navigating to your destination. Much of the second day will be spent applying your skills in the field and will culminate with a mild to moderate hike of 3-6 miles.
If developing a solid foundation in wilderness navigation is your goal than this is the class for you. Your instructor, Scott Fisher, is a former Army Infantry officer with over 30 years experience navigating in a wide range of environments including mountains, desert and jungle. And Rocky Fork State Park is an exceptionally beautiful location perfectly suited for this training. Maps and compasses provided. Ages 12+. This class is suitable for both those with and those without experience. Cost is $225. To reserve your spot or to get more information, please go to:
