The festival will kick off on Friday, July 3th, in Downtown Elko on Ormaza Way at 6PM. Come and enjoy the evening with family and friends to get a taste of what is to come for the rest of the weekend. There will be dancing by the Elko Ariñak dancers, Basque sport exhibitions of weight lifting and wood chopping. Stay and enjoy our facilities to watch the firework display that evening.
Saturday, July 4th, we will host our annual 4th of July parade in downtown Elko beginning at 11 a.m. The parade will end at the Elko County Fairgrounds. From there, we will head to the Basque Clubhouse where we will have an afternoon filled with events, food and drinks beginning at 1pm. There will be multiple dance groups and athletes from across the country performing. Watch traditional Basque rural sports featuring weightlifting, wood chopping, tug-o-war and more. That evening, beginning at 9pm, we will dance the night away at the Elko Basque Clubhouse with a live band and full bar.
To wind down the festival on Sunday, July 5th, we will gather for a morning mass at 11 a.m. at the Elko Basque Club followed by a Sheepherder’s Bread Contest. Spend the day enjoying a picnic of delicious Basque cuisine while watching dance and Basque sport exhibitions. Sunday will also include our Jota and Irrintzi contest.

In 1959, the Elko Euzkaldunak Club was founded in order to bring together regional descendants of the Basques, many of whom emigrated from France and Spain to become ranchers and sheepherders in the American West. Their gatherings included singing, dancing, cooking and generally keeping the traditions of Basque culture alive.

When Nevada celebrated its centennial in 1964, the Elko Basque Club set its sights on creating a much larger event to include Basques from across the country. Invitations went out to Basque clubs and, sure enough, musicians, dancers and athletes descended on Elko for the big event. Thanks to Elko’s central location to so many Basque communities, the event quickly grew into the National Basque Festival.
