Michigan is ours to protect.We’re all troubled by a federal agenda aimed to deregulate, defund and threaten the things we hold close: our air, waters, people and places we love. Repairing that federal architecture may take a generation—so we Michiganders have to step up. And the Michigan Environmental Council has the expertise and immense network to do just that. The Ours to Protect event series invites you into a conversation about what those solutions look like, and how you can help protect our state.This event will focus on work protecting Michigan’s bountiful freshwater resources—not just our Great Lakes, but the lakes, rivers and streams that flow across city borders and connect us all. From eroding the Clean Water Act by narrowing which waters should be protected, to stripping funding from Great Lakes research, to proposing massive cuts to environmental departments (the likes of which we’re seeing mirrored at the state level), the federal administration has made it clear: protecting our water is not a priority.That’s why we’re leading an effort to ensure Michigan’s water protections are stronger than federal standards by fighting against “No stricter than federal” proposals; pressing lawmakers to properly fund critical water infrastructure and the entities tasked with water monitoring; and continually combatting pollution sources like CAFOs and failing septic systems across the state.
