About this Event

Welcome to destination #6 of This Place Meant - a sound pilgrimage of Kent's heritage - The Hot Tin in Faversham
Sound Emergence with guest artist Maureen Wolloshin

About the The Hot Tin

The Hot Tin is a grassroots live music and arts venue in Faversham, set within a restored Victorian corrugated iron “tin” church on Whitstable Road. Opened in 2018, it was created as a community-focused social hub, offering an intimate and informal setting that champions local creatives alongside global artists.

The venue is home to Routestock CIC, founded by Romana Bellinger and Mike Eden, an organisation dedicated to bringing communities together through art and music.

About Maureen Wolloshin and her work for this project

Bio

Maureen is an oboist, improviser, composer and feministing academic. Her work is an experimental ‘making with’– a co-creating with others, objects and locations.

She plays with Free Women, Noisy Women, London Improvisers Orchestra and Free Range Orchestra, duets with Stevie Wishart and Khabat Abas and has presented her research across Europe.

This Project

Maureen has longstanding interest in the now forgotten sonic world of the anchoress. From 1464 for at least 100 years there was an anchoress living in a cell attached to Faversham’s parish church, St Mary of Charity. Pilgrims would have visited the anchoresses to pray, commune, and make offerings. In 1885 the church was thriving, the anchoresses were long gone, and a iron chapel (our Hot Tin) was erected to increase the church’s capacity.

Inspred by this history, Maureen will create a sound piece which imagines and echoes the sonic world the anchoresses would have experienced, and bring it to life through her instruments, people, field recordings taken outside the original church window and, the evolving organs and bellows of The Hot Tin.
