The Dallas Paleontological Society will meet next on Wednesday, September 10th, at 7PM Central time, in the Boonesville Auditorium (Room H125) of the Ellison Miles Building (Bldg H) at Brookhaven Campus of Dallas College, 3939 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch.
The main presentation will be by Dr. Ryan Breslawski on "From Bison antiquus to Bison bison".
Bison antiquus is one of few Pleistocene megafauna species in North American to leave modern descendants. We know that Pleistocene bison were larger than their counterparts today, and converging lines of evidence now suggest that they behaved differently as well. While changing climates and plant communities played a role in this evolutionary path, these animals also had to adapt to a fundamentally human landscape, and people almost certainly influenced their recent evolution.
Dr. Ryan is a zooarchaeologist at AR Consultants, Inc. in Richardson, where he analyzes archaeological animal remains from northeastern Texas. He earned his BS from the University of Utah, MS from Utah State University, and PhD from Southern Methodist University, all in anthropology. His research focuses on the paleoecology of North American mammals during the late Quaternary, especially as it relates to the human past. He has worked on Pleistocene and Holocene sites across the Intermountain West and eastern Prairies.
