- **Event Description**: Shattuck-St. Mary’s School will welcome acclaimed author and alumnus Harry MacLean, Class of 1960, back to campus as part of its Alumni in Residence Program. MacLean will spend the week of November 3–7 engaging with students and faculty, culminating in a public evening event on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Newhall Auditorium.

The program, “From In Broad Daylight to Starkweather: A Life in Law, Crime, and Storytelling,” will highlight MacLean’s acclaimed new book Starkweather: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree That Changed America while also revisiting his career-defining true crime classic, In Broad Daylight, the Edgar Award–winning New York Times bestseller that was adapted into a major motion picture. “Starkweather” was selected as a Best Nonfiction Book of 2023 by the Washington Post. The Post review compared MacLean's writing to that of Truman Capote and Norman Mailer.  

Guests will hear MacLean, a lawyer, discuss his writing process, the challenges of blending law and narrative, and the enduring cultural impact of the crimes he has chronicled. The evening will conclude with audience Q&A and a book signing. Copies of both Starkweather and In Broad Daylight will be available for purchase at the event.

“Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is excited to welcome back alum, Harry MacLean ‘60, as our first Alumni in Residence,” stated Head of School Matt Cavellier. “Mr. MacLean’s expertise as a true crime investigator and storyteller, combined with his experience working with students on their own writing make him the perfect person to kick off what we expect to become a long-standing tradition at Shattuck.”  

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served.
