For our next event, we’re excited to have daylily hybridizer Dan Robarts as our guest speaker from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, September 27th at the Mountainside Community Church located at 18 Mountain Road in Falmouth. Dan is an accomplished horticulturalist who has had a lifelong passion for daylilies and has been hybridizing for over 2 decades. Dan has worked with some of the giants of daylily hybridizing: Steve Moldovan, Curt Hanson, Richard Norris, and others, and has a number of registrations to his credit. A big thank you goes out to Paul Bourret for contacting Dan and asking him if he would be willing to speak to our group. I hope you are all able to attend what is sure to be an entertaining and inspiring presentation. After Dan’s talk we will have our annual club business meeting.
About Our Speaker
Dr. Dan W. H. Robarts is a dedicated horticulturist, plant breeder, and educator whose passion for plants is rooted in both rigorous science and creative design. He currently serves as the Grower, Propagator, and Greenhouse Coordinator at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, where he leads efforts in plant propagation, greenhouse production, seed breeding, and horticultural research.
Dan holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bates College and earned his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Evolutionary Genetics from The Ohio State University. His academic and hands-on experiences combine to give him deep expertise in both the scientific foundations and practical applications of ecological horticulture.
A lifelong nature enthusiast, Dan grew up in rural New Hampshire surrounded by large family gardens and early love for ornamental plants like daylilies. Over the course of nearly two decades, he has devoted extensive time to breeding and hybridizing daylilies, always striving for plants that are more beautiful, resilient, ecologically appropriate, and interesting.
At the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, in addition to greenhouse and seed work, Dan also manages the Giles Rhododendron Garden—curating plant selections across varied terrain and ensuring strong performance in diverse site conditions.
