If you love bicycling and history, please join us for a new historic bike tour around Falmouth on Friday, June 5th.Museum docent and tour guide Scott Wayne will lead a small pack of cyclists on a route that loops from the Village Green, down to Woods Hole’s Penzance Point, and back again. The bike path opened in 1975-1976 and was funded partly by the Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission. Its dedication in 1976 was considered to be part of Falmouth's official U.S. Bicentennial celebration. This unique tour will retrace the route taken by Falmouth citizens in September 1930. In that year, Massachusetts was celebrating its 300th birthday, and each town placed markers at its own most cherished historic sites. Falmouth residents made a solemn procession to nine locations, unveiling memorial plaques at each stop. They traveled on foot and by motorcar, and no doubt a few hardy souls joined the parade on their bicycles! These historic markers have stood for 95 years. You may have been passing them by for years without even noticing them. Some locations, like the Village Green, you can probably guess. Others may be news to you. (Ever heard of General Swift’s birthplace?) Our bike tour will stop at each location, where Scott will explain its significance and show vintage photos. Counting the time spent at these stops, the tour should take about three hours.WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOWThe ride covers about 11 miles, of which 7 are on the bike path and 4 on streets.Bring your own bike, helmet, water, etc.No fully electric bikes; pedal-assisted okayParticipants must be 16 or olderParticipants must sign a liability waiverLimit of 8 participantsNo rain date; if canceled for weather your money will be refundedTour is 3 hours$25 Non-Members / $15 Museums on the Green Members

"description": "The Falmouth Museums on the Green, owned and operated by the Falmouth Historical Society, is a two-acre campus that has been serving the residents and visitors of Falmouth since 1900. One of the most popular sites in Falmouth for visitors, it contains the 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House—a magnificent Federalist-period residence with guided tours demonstrating what life was like for an affluent physician in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; the recently-restored 1730 Conant House—used for exhibits, research and genealogy studies; the Hallett Barn Visitors’ Center—rebuilt in 2002 on the site of an original barn and used a welcoming point for those coming to Falmouth as well as the “Whaling Wives Gift Shop”; the Colonial Gardens—showing off plantings, such as a boxwood tree, that go back to the days prior to the American Revolution; Memorial Park—a tranquil place of refuge that is open to all visitors looking for relaxation; and the recently-opened (2012) Cultural Center—a superb, 3600 square foot structure used for public and private programs and events, public restrooms, kitchen facilities, and as a repository for archival collections to preserve Falmouth’s past. It also has a series of rotating historical exhibits throughout the campus. "
