- **Event Name**: Nocturnal by Nature: Fireflies!
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 17 Jun, 2026 at 08:30 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Join wildlife ecologist Deborah Perkins for a three-part evening lecture and guided walk exploring some of Maine’s most fascinating nocturnal and crepuscular wildlife. Each session begins with a short indoor presentation, followed by a walk at Gilsland Farm to observe and listen for wildlife in real time.

The series will focus on fireflies, bats, and birds, highlighting their ecology, seasonal activity, and the habitats that support them. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of these species and how to better observe and support them in the landscape. Sign up for one or all three!

Nocturnal by Nature: Fireflies!
June 17, 7-8:30 pm

Join us for an illuminating program about fireflies, and how you can help them at home.

In the first of a three-part series, ecologist Deborah Perkins will reveal the fascinating lives of fireflies – from the deep dark part of their life cycle to the glowing displays of the adults on summer nights.

Sadly, these enchanting insects have declined over the decades but you can help them thrive.

Learn
Why fireflies are indicators of ecosystem health.
How to manage vegetation, woody debris, and other structural features.
Firefly-friendly lighting practices.

Nocturnal by Nature: Bats!
July 15, 7-8:30 pm

Join us for an insightful program about Maine’s bats, and how you can help them at home.

In the second of a three-part series, ecologist Deborah Perkins will shed light on the unique ecology, behavior, and habitat needs of these flying mammals — from feeding habits to maternity roosts, and more.

Although bat populations remain particularly vulnerable, you can offset their declines with a few simple practices in your own landscape.

Learn
How bats are uniquely equipped to live out their lives in darkness.
How to provide good habitat for female bats and their young.
Bat-friendly lighting practices.

Nocturnal by Nature: Migrating Birds!
September 16, 6:30-8 pm

Join us for a well-timed seasonal program about migrating birds, and how you can help them journey safely on their way.

In the final part of the series, ecologist Deborah Perkins will focus on the migratory stage of a bird’s life cycle and how we can support their (mostly nocturnal) flights.

Songbirds in particular face an array of challenges during fall migration, and each one of us can do something to help.

Learn
How birds are capable of physiological and navigational feats unparalleled in the animal kingdom.
How to take action on the ground that will help birds aloft, and during stopovers.
Why many birds migrate at night, and why bird-friendly lighting is so important.
