When Charles B. Ray’s daughter H. Cordelia Ray later memorialized his legacy in an early twentieth-century poetry volume, she placed the sonnet “To My Father” alongside elegies that honored a touted senator, a famed orator, a preeminent newspaperman and decorated soldiers.
