He visited Scotland only twice after removing to England as a child. One of those occasions was for his coronation in 1633, when a major refurbishment of the Chapel Royal at Falkland Palace, still in evidence today, was undertaken. Discover with our speaker how Charles’s fraught relations with his native kingdom resulted in devastating wars across Scotland, Ireland, and England during the 1640s. Hear why the Scots were accused of ‘selling’ their king to the English Parliament and how this led to Charles’s execution in 1649.About the speaker:Laura Stewart is Professor of Early Modern British History at the University of York, where she was recently Head of Department. She is a specialist in the early Stuart and civil war periods. Hear Laura speak about her research for BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time and for David Olosuga’s Union: The Making of Britain. Her second book, Rethinking the Scottish Revolution: Covenanted Scotland, 1637-51 (Oxford, paperback, 2018) won the American Historical Association prize for the best book in British History. Union and Revolution: Scotland and Beyond, 1625-1745 (Edinburgh, 2021), co-authored with Janay Nugent, offers an accessible survey of a turbulent but transformative period in Scotland’s history. It was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Book of the Year Award.Please bring along copies of Laura's books and she would be happy to sign them!
