Our route starts from Callendar House.  From there we head to Falkirk High Station where we pick up the Union Canal towpath for a short stretch before heading into Bantaskine Estate where there are good views to the north towards the River Forth.  We will have an opportunity to see the Falkirk Muir 1746 Monument which marks the site of the battle of Falkirk in January 1746 between the Jacobites and the Government (Hanoverian) forces.  From there we head first south and then east through a mix of arable and woodland into Kilbean Wood to rejoin the canal near Glen Village.  Another, slightly longer canal walk before dropping down into Callendar Estate, and to the start of the walk at Callendar House.

There is a long gradual climb up from the canal to Bantaskine with several shorter inclines throughout the walk including a couple of flights of steps.  Mainly on good footpaths but with some sections where the going underfoot can be a bit difficult.  Strong walking footwear is essential and poles, if you use them, recommended.  Several road crossings.

Let the walk leader know if you will be travelling direct to the start point or if you will be going to the meeting point at Livingston North Train Station, South Car Par EH54 8EG, for car sharing.
