What to expect?
Ashley will demonstrate how he paints with watercolour in a loose, quick and impressionist way. He will
show you how he mixes and apply paints to create negative shapes, mark making, exaggerate
contrast and to make decisions on how to simplify a scene that you can paint with minimal
drawing to include figures.
Materials List (workshop)
This is not an exhaustive list so please bring what you are familiar with using, which may or may
not include the following:
Drawing
A selection of pencils to include an HB pencil (not H pencils e.g. 2H as they are quite hard and
will bruise the paper)
An eraser (putty is preferred) not essential.
Watercolour - From Ashley Raddon
I tend to paint using a limited palette so please bring your own favourite paints/brands including
primary colours that we can mix i.e. blue and a yellow = green.
These can be tubes or full/half pans. I use a mixture of both. Student level watercolour brands
are fine for the workshop and practicing. If you don't have these, bring what you have and we
can adapt.
Palette ~ a large palette (rather than small) or a palette with large mixing wells are preferred.
Please bring what you use. A small roasting tray, plate or similar can also be used.
Brushes
Bring your favourite brushes and a selection of brushes (large round to small with a point) that
allow you to apply a large wash to using a rigger brush or equivalent for any finishing details,
highlights (i.e. figures). I use a range of Tintoretto and Escoda brushes, both natural and
synthetic.
A desk or standing easel or something to incline your painting board, masking tape.
Your choice of your preferred watercolour paper, possibly cold pressed with a texture, NOT or
rough if you wish to practice the dry brush technique. A heavy cartridge paper is fine if preferred
for a different approach.
A water pot and some kitchen roll.
NB Please bring anything else that's personal to your style and we can adapt and include to
personalise your own artwork.
