About the event

Adding Life to Concrete
This talk looks at how permeability and internal moisture influence long-term performance in concrete.

About this Event

We often assume that if concrete hits strength and cover is correct, durability will follow. In reality, it’s usually moisture movement inside the concrete that enables most of the problems we deal with later; chloride ingress, carbonation, chemical attack and ultimately corrosion of the reinforcement.

This talk looks at how permeability and internal moisture influence long-term performance, and why there can sometimes be a gap between intended design life and what actually happens on site.

This talk will explain how catalytic hydrogel technology works within the pore structure to immobilise free moisture and reduce ongoing reactivity, using a few practical examples:

• Arresting corrosion in a heavily chloride-contaminated marine wharf

• Waterproofing a 100-year-old pier in the Outer Hebrides in challenging weather conditions

• Protecting a new dam structure against soft water attack from day one
