Upon arrival, local guides will take us by small skiff to observe one of the region's largest Brown Pelican nesting colonies, offering an incredible opportunity to witness these charismatic seabirds up close while learning about their ecology, conservation, and remarkable recovery in the Chesapeake Bay.After our pelican tour, we'll spend time exploring the village of Ewell, keeping an eye out for shorebirds, wading birds, Ospreys, Bald Eagles, and other species that make Smith Island such a special place for wildlife and birders alike.This is a full-day adventure combining boat travel, coastal birding, and one of the Chesapeake's most unique communities. Whether you're hoping to add Brown Pelican to your life list or simply experience a place unlike any other in Maryland, this promises to be a memorable day on the water.Accessibility? Pace: Relaxed, with periods of standing during boat rides and short walks through the village? Distance: Approximately 1–2 miles of walking throughout the day? Terrain: Marina docks, sidewalks, gravel, and uneven surfaces in portions of the village⛰ Elevation: Mostly flat? Rest Areas: Seating available on the ferry, small boats, and throughout the village♿ Wheelchair Access: Limited. Boarding the ferry and especially the small skiffs requires stepping into and out of boats and may not be suitable for all mobility levels.
