- **Event Description**: Campbell High School Sabers, 2026 State Football Champions, Named Grand Marshals for Prince Kūhiō Parade
(Kapolei, HI) — The 2026 Prince Kūhiō Parade will take place on Saturday, March 28, in Kapolei. The Campbell High School Sabers football team will serve as Honorary Grand Marshals. Organized by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, this annual event honors the life and legacy of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole.
The Sabers are recognized as the first HHSAA Open Division State Champions after their thrilling overtime victory over Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. Their selection as Grand Marshals honors both their accomplishment and the pride of West Oʻahu.
Campbell High School has a significant connection to Hawaiʻi’s aliʻi legacy. Named for James Campbell, the school honors his daughter, Abigail Campbell, who became a Princess of Hawaiʻi upon marrying Prince David Kawānanakoa of the House of Kalākaua. Prince David Kawānanakoa was the brother of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, establishing a direct genealogical link between the Campbell family and the legacy celebrated by this parade.
The parade will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Kapolei Parkway, starting at Kapolei Hale and ending at Ka Makana Aliʻi Center, where a free concert and community celebration with live entertainment, food, and arts and crafts vendors will be held.
Now in its fourth year in Kapolei, the parade proudly celebrates the region’s connection to Prince Kūhiō’s inspiring legacy, including its four Hawaiian homestead communities and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands headquarters. This festive event invites the community to honor his remarkable contributions and reflect on the enduring impact of his advocacy for Native Hawaiians.
Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, known as Ke Aliʻi Makaʻāinana (the Citizen Prince), was born in 1871 and named a Prince by King Kalākaua. Educated in Hawaiʻi, California, and England, Kūhiō served in the government of the Hawaiian Kingdom until the 1893 overthrow.
He was imprisoned for attempting to restore the monarchy and later returned to improve conditions for his people.
Elected as Hawaiʻi’s delegate to the United States Congress, he served for 20 years and championed the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, which set aside more than 200,000 acres for Native Hawaiian homesteads. Kūhiō was instrumental in developing Hawaiʻi’s transportation infrastructure and formalized the territory’s county government system. He also re-established the Royal Order of Kamehameha I in 1903 to strengthen Native Hawaiian identity.
In 1918, he founded the first Hawaiian Civic Club, a movement now with over 60 clubs and 3,500 members in Hawaiʻi and the U.S.
The contributions of Prince Kūhiō are widely recognized throughout Hawaiʻi, with schools, buildings, streets, and parks named in his honor. The state observes Prince Kūhiō Day as a holiday each year, which this year will be commemorated on Thursday, March 26.
