When the state of Washington started arresting Indigenous tribal fishers, it was a declaration of war. Scores of legal battles culminated in a landmark Supreme Court case that was meant to put an end to the violent Fish Wars. Fifty years later, the fight for salmon continues! Fish War was produced by North Forty Productions and Northwest Treaty Tribes Media, with support from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Elwha Klallam Tribe, Lummi Nation, Nisqually Indian Tribe, Squaxin Island Tribe, S'Klallam Nation, Port Madison Enterprises, Quinault Indian Nation, Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Tulalip Tribes, The Suquamish Tribe, and Washington Filmworks.

North Forty Productions is an independent production company that has worked with the treaty tribes in western Washington for several years to create short films with the goal of educating people about treaty rights and the ongoing work being done by tribal natural resources managers. The relationship has produced an archive of hundreds of hours of interviews and footage. The feature-length documentary FISH WAR is the Culmination of that work. Northwest Treaty Tribes Media is dedicated to telling the stories of the treaty tribes who have been environmental stewards in western Washington since time immemorial and have co-managed fisheries with the state since the Boldt decision in 1974. As a result, the treaty tribes are active in every aspect of environmental management across the region, protecting and enhancing natural resources for everyone.
