Uganda is set to make history as it hosts the inaugural Africa Dragon Boat Cup from 1st–4th October 2026!

During a meeting with Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Solomon Muwonge, President of the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation, confirmed Uganda’s readiness to welcome this major international sporting event.

The meeting also featured a delegation from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation led by Mr. Ehab Gouda and Ms. Mary Lai, who are in Uganda to assess preparedness, train and certify local officials, and inspect event venues.

Amb. Kabonero applauded the Federation’s efforts, noting that Dragon Boat sport presents unique opportunities for Ugandans to develop talent, promote the country globally, and strengthen people-to-people relations.

Mr. Gouda shared that the 2026 competition will bring together over 500 professional athletes from 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America—along with hundreds of fans and millions of online viewers.

With a history spanning 2,500 years, Dragon Boat is one of China’s most cherished traditional sports, attracting over 50 million players worldwide.
According to Ms. Mary Lai, hosting this continental event will give Uganda a powerful platform to showcase opportunities in tourism, investment, and trade, leveraging sports as a catalyst for engagement.

The meeting was also attended by Ms. Margaret Kafeero, Head of Public Diplomacy, and Mr. Stilson Muhwezi, First Secretary in charge of Sports Diplomacy.
