With the mean local temperature projected to increase 5–10°F by the end of the century and the onset of increased heat waves in 2025 and 2026 alone; how is the region preparing for longer and more intense heat waves and their impacts on communities? The San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative (SDRCC) at the University of San Diego is working to make San Diego safer during the hotter months. With funding from the Governor's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation’s Extreme Heat and Community Resilience Program, SDRCC is leading the Solutions for Heat Adaption and Equity in San Diego, or SHADE SD, project. The first step in these collaborative efforts is the launch of the San Diego Heat Risk Explorer (Explorer), the first interactive localized heat risk map of San Diego County, developed by SDRCC and Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation (CCCIA) at the University of California, San Diego. The Explorer is an interactive heat-risk map of San Diego County, computed at the census-tract level. To use the Explorer, users select variables from the available options (such as heat exposure, demographics, health conditions, air conditioning access, green space proximity, income, and others) – once selected, the tool returns a composite Heat Risk Index and the dominant driver for each census tract. Join us for this informational Webinar on August 18, 2026 at 2:00 pm to learn more about the Explorer, what it encompasses, and how to use the tool.
