FLUX Quartet and guests Steve Beck (piano) ++ Marguerite Cox (bass).About this EventPIANO CONCERTO by Greg SaunierfeaturingFLUX QUARTETTom Chiu, Conrad Harris, ViolinsJosh Henderson, ViolaRubin Kodheli, CelloSpecial Guests:Steve Beck, PianoMaggie Cox, BassGreg Saunier is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the drummer for American indie rock band Deerhoof. In its 30 years, Deerhoof has released 19 albums and tours the world frequently. His musical collaborators have included Wadada Leo Smith, Marc Ribot, Brooklyn Rider String Quartet, Kronos String Quartet, Questlove, Jherek Bischoff, Konono No.1, Bang on a Can, yMusic, Ensemble Dal Niente, Frederic Forte, Juana Molina, Joanna Newsom, Zach Hill, Brian Chippendale, Yonatan Gat, Serengeti, Mats Gustafsson, Sofia Jernberg, Mary Halvorson, Ron Miles, Anthony Braxton, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Jeff Tweedy, Sean Ono Lennon, Andre de Ridder, and many others.PIANO CONCERTO:Inspired partly by the work of David Graeber, particularly his posthumous masterpiece with David Wengrow, The Dawn of Everything, this piece is an excursion into the supposedly “rational” thought of the European colonial era, particularly the music of the Enlightenment period. I always thought that music of the Western Classical era was intended by its composers as more experimental and tongue-in-cheek than has come to be assumed by the subsequent layers of reverence that have been encrusted upon it — by self-aggrandizing patrons and self-congratulatory academics, by generations of perfectionistic, competitive classical performers, by the rigidifying medium of recording itself, and by the Ron DeSantis’s of the world, deploying what they imagine to be superior “Western culture” as a weapon of white supremacy. Think of how many comedic and nonsensical moments populate the music of Beethoven! This piece adopts something of the discursive train of thought, the dramatis personae, the rate of musical information, and even the harmonic and gestural language of this music, but without the teleology, without the resolution, without the inevitability, without the bombastic whiff of historical progress, conquering savagery, mastering evil, or triumphing over death. The FLUX Quartet, "one of the most fearless and important new-music ensembles around" (San Francisco Chronicle), has performed to rave reviews in venues worldwide, including the Tate Modern with BBC Radio3, Park Avenue Armory, Kennedy Center, Mount Tremper Arts, EMPAC, Walker Art Center, Carnegie's Zankel Hall, as well as international festivals in Australia, Europe and Asia. It has also premiered new works on numerous experimental incubators, including Roulette, The Music Gallery, and Mount Tremper Arts. FLUX’s radio appearances include NPR’s All Things Considered, WNYC’s New Sounds and Soundcheck, and WFMU’s Stochastic Hit Parade. The group’s discography includes recordings on the Cantaloupe, Innova, New World, Passin Thru, and Tzadik labels, in addition to two acclaimed releases on Mode encompassing the full catalogue of Morton Feldman’s output for string quartet.Strongly influenced by the "anything-goes" philosophy of the fluxus art movement, violinist Tom Chiu founded FLUX in the late 90's. The quartet has since cultivated an uncompromising repertoire that combines late twentieth-century iconoclasts such as Cage, Nancarrow, Scelsi, and Ligeti with today's visionaries, including Oliver Lake, Michael Hersch, David First, Alvin Lucier, Michael Schumacher, Sean Shepard, Wadada Leo Smith, Julia Wolfe, Matthew Welch, and others. Having premiered over 100 new works, FLUX has been awarded grants from the American Composers Forum, Aaron Copland Fund, Meet-The-Composer, New Music USA, and Chamber Music America. FLUX also discovers emerging composers from its many college residencies, including Wesleyan, Dartmouth, Williams, Princeton, Bard, and the College of William and Mary. The spirit to expand stylistic boundaries is a trademark of the FLUX Quartet, and to that end the quartet avidly pursues interdisciplinary projects, resulting in acclaimed new works with choreographers Pam Tanowitz and Christopher Wheeldon, avant balloonist Judy Dunaway, digital collective The OpenEnded Group, and visual artist Matthew Barney. In the upcoming season, FLUX will perform and record the full string quartet output of Toshi Ichiyanagi, widely acknowledged as an influential pioneer of the Japanese avant-garde.STEVE BECK:Pianist Steven Beck continues to gather acclaim for his performances and recordings.
