This workshop series will support the co-creating and imagining of new futures for and with our kids.With an all-star line up of facilitators including former-Oakland Teacher of the Year Alykhan Boolani, MacArthur Award winner Sujatha Baliga and internationally recognized artist Brett Cook, each workshop is an original, one-of-a-kind experience.About the WorkshopNo Mud No Lotus: Reflections On Grief As Transformation – with Brett CookThe loss of a child is said to be a parent’s greatest fear. When that fear is realized, what is the path through grief? Drawing from a long-term participatory art project working with Oakland parents whose children died by gun violence, artist Brett Cook will share reflections and practices generated through collective processes of grief and the celebration of life. Participants will reflect on their own relationship to grief through contemplative and creative exercises.ChildcareChildcare is provided for children 2-13 for those who register for childcare tickets 5 days ahead of the event. This is to ensure we have enough volunteers available to help. Childcare will be led by experienced childcare providers and supported by volunteers. To access the free childcare you must reserve a ticket for each child and sign the consent form. Drop off children between 9:45-10:00 as the workshop will start at 10:00am.FoodWe are thrilled to partner with Reem's California who is providing delicious light eats for participants. In this workshop, inspired by Mother Cyborg's messages to the future quilting technique, we work with pre-cut fabrics to tell individual stories that come together to create a set of collectively made quilts that explore the possibilities and ideas behind the quotes "The Future is Not Foreclosed" and "The Grief is Both Yours and Ours."(Oct) Play is Real: Ritual, Practice & Meaning during Overwhelm – with Dania CabelloKids make sense of the world through play – they build connections, learn, invent rules, meet people, continue culture, laugh, cry, move and more. As we age, play can be seen as frivolous, childish or entertainment, but it can also reground us in our values, priorities and commonalities. In this workshop we’ll play – and in that play we’ll uncover ways to navigate overwhelm and crisis when many feel powerless and isolated.(Nov) So Our Kids Can Ask Without Fear – with sujatha baligaHow do we create the conditions for our kids to ask for what they need? What are the conditions that allowed you to ask for help in a time of need? Drawing from over two decades of experience in restorative justice, sujatha baliga will lead participants in examining foundational challenges to moving past punitive culture – especially in interpersonal and intergenerational relationships.
