WHEN IS HALLOWEEN CELEBRATED IN 2024?

Every year, Halloween is celebrated on 31st of October around the world.

IS HALLOWEEN AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY IN GERMANY?

Germany does not have public holiday for Halloween. Businesses have normal opening hours and it is just another weekday!

WHY IS HALLOWEEN CELEBRATED?

There are two theories about why Halloween is celebrated that people believe in. One is that it originated from the ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain. Celts believed it was the day when the boundary between living and dead was blurred! Later, it started getting associated with All Saints' Eve, a day on which Christians remember and honor the dead.

IS THERE TREAT-AND-TREATING IN GERMANY?

In Germany and Austria, trick-or-treating is the part of Halloween that is least celebrated. It is only in Germany's larger cities that you will witness child groups genuinely knocking on doors. "Süßes oder Saures" or "Süßes, sonst gibt's Saure" are the phrases people use when gathering candies from their neighbors.
