Administered by the El Monte City School District, the campus has been transformed through green infrastructure improvements developed by Amigos de los Ríos, including native plantings, rain gardens, bioswales, and expanded tree canopy — creating a welcoming, sustainable outdoor space for students, families, and the surrounding community.Mary W. Jackson Elementary - 593 W Woodbury Rd, Altadena, CA 91001Amigos de los Ríos transformed Mary W. Jackson Elementary's schoolyard by removing 21,000 square feet of asphalt and concrete to reduce the heat island effect and improve stormwater management. The project installed pervious pavement, bioretention planters, and bioswales alongside five outdoor classrooms built from boulders and recycled urban lumber. The team planted 36 new trees and 600 native shrubs, created nature-based play areas, and enhanced ADA accessibility throughout. A phase two Safe Clean Water Project will address stormwater challenges in the surrounding streets.
