Tree Planting & Early Tree Care

Trees are an investment that we make for the landscape, so getting the tree off to a good start is one of the best impacts we can make to enhance and prolong the long-term benefits that trees can provide for us all.  The discussion will cover choosing the right tree, proper tree placement and planting for your landscape, and early care to assure your tree can thrive.  
Lisa Louck is an Iowa DNR District Forester that covers Des Moines, Lee, Henry, and Louisa Counties.  She assists landowners with timber management plans and general advice/information on woodland management, and also gets to assist in our urban forests with tree care, planting, and tree inventory plans.  Lisa lives in Burlington and currently serves on the city Tree Board.

Trees provide far more than shade. Learn how wildlife depends on them every day—turkeys roost in branches, bats tuck themselves under shagbark hickory bark, and birds hunt insects living on trees. Together, trees and animals form partnerships that support thriving ecosystems.
Shania Hansen is a Naturalist with Des Moines County Conservation. She’s been a naturalist since 2022 and joined the team in April 2025. Originally from northeast Nebraska, she’s an Iowa transplant with a background in wildlife, recreation, and tourism, and she loves sharing her passion for the outdoors with others.
