Η ομαδική έκθεση “Rehearsals in placemaking” εγκαινιάζει το καλλιτεχνικό πρόγραμμα του Δημοτικού Κέντρου Τεχνών Λεμεσού – Αποθήκες Παπαδάκη για το 2026. Οι καλλιτεχνικές προτάσεις που παρουσιάζονται προσεγγίζουν την πόλη και το αρχιτεκτονικό κέλυφος των αποθηκών ως κάτι που συνεχώς αλλάζει, και επανανοηματοδοτείται. Το πρότζεκτ εστιάζει στον τόπο και την καλλιτεχνική πρακτική ως δράση, κίνηση και έργο, συνδέοντάς τα με την καθημερινότητα ως πεδίο κοινωνικής πράξης. Αντλώντας από πρακτικές αυτοοργάνωσης, αφηγείται πως η δημιουργία, η κριτική σκέψη και η συνύπαρξη αναδύονται σε περιόδους κοινωνικής ρήξης και οικολογικής καταστροφής. 

Καλλιτέχν(ιδ)ες, συγγραφείς και δημιουργοί παρουσιάζουν δεκαπέντε διατομεακές προτάσεις, με κύρια εκφραστικά μέσα τη συγγραφή, το βίντεο, τον ήχο, τη γλυπτική, την περφόρμανς, τις τοποειδικές εγκαταστάσεις, το σχέδιο και την αρχειοθέτηση. Ως εναλλακτικές καλλιτεχνικές παρεμβάσεις και πρακτικές συν-σχεδιασμού του δημόσιου χώρου (placemaking), οι προτάσεις αυτές κινούνται ταυτόχρονα ανάμεσα στο ποιητικό, το πραγματικό και το φαντασιακό. 

Σε μια εποχή που ο κοινός χώρος ολοένα και περιορίζεται, το συνεργατικό αυτό πρότζεκτ διερευνά πώς ο δημόσιος χώρος και η πόλη στο σύνολό της μπορούν να επαναπροσδιοριστούν ως κοινά, αψηφώντας την εμπορευματοποίηση της καθημερινής ζωής και αναζητώντας τρόπους με τους οποίους η συλλογική παρουσία μπορεί να καθιερωθεί στην καθημερινότητα της πόλης.

Παράλληλα, το “Rehearsals in placemaking” γίνεται η αφορμή για τη δημιουργία του “living room” — ενός σημείου συνάντησης που διαμορφώνεται στον χώρο του Δημοτικού Κέντρου Τεχνών. Παραμένοντας ενεργό και μετά το τέλος της έκθεσης, το “living room” θα λειτουργεί ως ένας ζωντανός χώρος όπου η οικειότητα και το αίσθημα του ανήκειν ενεργοποιούνται μέσα από τη συνύπαρξη και τη συναναστροφή. Το “living room” θα φιλοξενεί, μεταξύ άλλων, συζητήσεις, παραστάσεις, βραδιές ποίησης, εργαστήρια, ομάδες ανάγνωσης και ακροάσεις ανοιχτές στο κοινό. Με τον χρόνο, ο χώρος αυτός θα συγκεντρώνει τα ίχνη των δράσεων και θα παραμένει ανοιχτός σε νέους τρόπους πολιτιστικής δημιουργίας, συνεχίζοντας να οραματίζεται τον δημόσιο χώρο, αλλιώς.

“Rehearsals in Placemaking” inaugurates the 2026 programme of the Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Apothikes Papadaki, unfolding as both a group exhibition and a process of reinhabiting the warehouse shell. The project approaches place and artistic practice as action, movement, and labour, forces that extend beyond repair through a commitment to the daily as a social space of transformative rehearsal. Drawing on methodologies of self-organisation, rehearsal is proposed as a way of practicing critical forms of making, thinking and being together in times of rupture and ecological catastrophe. 

Through a sequence of gestures and scores, the project brings together a transdisciplinary assembly of fifteen artistic contributions. Artists, writers and makers working across text, video, sound, sculpture, performance, site-specific installation, drawing, archiving, and public interventions, engage placemaking as a situated and relational act. The exhibition embraces artistic practices as modes of becoming — speculative, poetic, and pragmatic at once. 

At a time when place is increasingly constrained, the project asks how public space, its fragments, and the city more broadly might be reclaimed and reimagined as a commons that defies the financialisation of daily life. In doing so, it traces this urgent prompt as an attempt to imagine cultural space as an infrastructure of feeling and enchantment, and how it might be sustained through everydayness and togetherness.

Beyond the duration of the exhibition, “Rehearsals in Placemaking” sets a placeholder for the long term on-site activation of a “living room”: a space where familiarity and belonging are rehearsed, hosting frequent gatherings, assemblies, performances, listening sessions, poetry nights, walks, workshops and reading groups, and more. Over time, this space will nurture these encounters and inspire other ways of rehearsing public space.
