- **Event Description**: Art Seen is proud to present The Objects are Watching a new solo exhibition by Clare Burnett opening on Thursday, the 23rd of April. 
Clare Burnett, a British artist based in London and Berlin, returns to Cyprus to continue exploring themes from her exhibition Shapeshifters, Travellers of Conscience.  This show at Art Seen Projects, Nicosia in 2023, was inspired by the artefacts removed from Cyprus by Cesnola in the 19th century and was made from objects and materials found on the streets of Nicosia.

Her new project will focus on the movement of objects across borders, and how their meaning and value shifts over time.  The work is inspired by the Cypriot terracottas taken from the island and the rich tapestry woven by their journeys through Europe.  

Using natural and manmade materials collected in Cyprus, the exhibition will explore the layered histories of everyday objects, drawing connections between historic patterns of acquisition and today’s consumer culture.  Like the household terracottas of the past, today’s everyday plastics of bear witness, watching over our actions and lives until they too become the archeology of the future.  

The journeys of these ancient and contemporary objects mirror the movement of people and touch on the 21st century politics of division.  The flags that fly are an antidote, a friendly welcome and a neutral space, their colours and forms drawn from bowls, jugs and vases researched for the exhibition.

About the artist Clare Burnett
Clare lives and works in London, UK. She studied Architecture, Law and Social and Political Sciences at Christs College, Cambridge, Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art (St Martin's) and Art Educationat the Institute of Education, London. From 2015- 2022 she was President of the Royal Society of Sculptors. She grew up in France and Belgium and has studios in Berlin and London, shows nationally internationally and is represented by Art Seen in Cyprus. Η Art Seen παρουσιάζει με ιδιαίτερη χαρά τη νέα ατομική έκθεση της Clare Burnett με τίτλο The Objects are Watching, η οποία εγκαινιάζεται την Πέμπτη, 23 Απριλίου.

Η Clare Burnett, Βρετανίδα καλλιτέχνης με έδρα το Λονδίνο και το Βερολίνο, επιστρέφει στην Κύπρο για να συνεχίσει τη διερεύνηση θεματικών που ανέπτυξε στην έκθεσή της Shapeshifters, Travellers of Conscience (Art Seen Projects, Λευκωσία, 2023). Η συγκεκριμένη έκθεση αντλούσε έμπνευση από τα αρχαιολογικά αντικείμενα που αφαιρέθηκαν από την Κύπρο από τον Cesnola τον 19ο αιώνα και συγκροτήθηκε μέσα από αντικείμενα και υλικά που συλλέχθηκαν από τον αστικό ιστό της Λευκωσίας.

Το νέο της έργο εστιάζει στην κίνηση των αντικειμένων πέρα από σύνορα, καθώς και στη μεταβολή της σημασίας και της αξίας τους μέσα στον χρόνο. Η πρακτική της εμπνέεται από τα κυπριακά τερακότα που απομακρύνθηκαν από το νησί, καθώς και από το σύνθετο δίκτυο αφηγήσεων που διαμορφώθηκε μέσα από τις διαδρομές τους στην Ευρώπη.

Αξιοποιώντας φυσικά και τεχνητά υλικά που συλλέγονται στην Κύπρο, η έκθεση εξερευνά τις πολυεπίπεδες ιστορίες των καθημερινών αντικειμένων, αναδεικνύοντας συνδέσεις ανάμεσα σε ιστορικά μοτίβα απόκτησης και στις σύγχρονες μορφές καταναλωτικής κουλτούρας. Όπως τα οικιακά τερακότα του παρελθόντος, έτσι και τα σημερινά πλαστικά αντικείμενα λειτουργούν ως μάρτυρες, παρατηρώντας τις πράξεις και τις ζωές μας, έως ότου μετατραπούν και αυτά στην αρχαιολογία του μέλλοντος.

Οι διαδρομές αυτών των αρχαίων και σύγχρονων αντικειμένων αντανακλούν τις μετακινήσεις των ανθρώπων και αγγίζουν τις πολιτικές της διαίρεσης στον 21ο αιώνα. Οι σημαίες που παρουσιάζονται στην έκθεση λειτουργούν ως αντίδοτο: ως μια χειρονομία φιλοξενίας και ένας ουδέτερος τόπος, όπου τα χρώματα και οι μορφές τους αντλούνται από αγγεία — μπολ, στάμνες και βάζα — που αποτέλεσαν αντικείμενο έρευνας για την ανάπτυξη του έργου.

Clare Burnett
Η Clare ζει και εργάζεται στο Λονδίνο, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Σπούδασε Αρχιτεκτονική, Νομικές και Κοινωνικές και Πολιτικές Επιστήμες στο Christ’s College του Cambridge, Καλές Τέχνες στη Byam Shaw School of Art (St Martin's) και Εκπαίδευση Τέχνης στο Institute of Education του Λονδίνου. Από το 2015 έως το 2022 ήταν Πρόεδρος της Royal Society of Sculptors.
