FJT, The Musical Offering & Evanston Public Library Partner For Black History 24/7/365
"Complex Conversations" is a new collaboration between The Musical Offering, Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre, and Evanston Public Library. This initiative is designed to stimulate thoughtful and spirited dialogue between artists, educators, and the public regarding the arts and the institutions behind them. This event marks the first in a series of conversations scheduled throughout the year.
Complex Conversation No. 1
"Porgy and Bess" is widely regarded as one of America's most acclaimed yet controversial musicals, representing a significant shift in Black American musical theater. While the original folk opera draws inspiration from Jazz, Spirituals, and Blues, it has also faced substantial criticism since its debut. Our inaugural "Complex Conversation" will address the various debates and complexities surrounding this production. We look forward to your participation in this important discussion.
Panelists: Rick Ferguson (Co-Founder & Artistic Director of The Musical Offering), Tim Rhoze (Artistic Director of Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre)
There will be a light pre- and post-conversation reception with small bites, wine, and soft drinks. Free and open to the general public. Registration is required. This event is recommended for high school age and up.
