It made its way into Humboldt County down the perilous South Fork Gorge, soon passing through suddenly-populous Garberville, and then running through a series of riverside towns on its way to Eureka and points north: Weott and Pepperwood, which served tourists and locals until taken out by two massive floods; Loleta, a dairy center with the deadliest curve on the Humboldt County stretch of highway; and on the bay, Arcata, where modern-day motorists can still drive along a section of the roadway’s original concrete. It will be a quick trip along a lengthy stretch of highway but we won’t have to worry about getting a speeding ticket.
