About the event

Penumbra Artist Talk
STARS IN HER EYES. Photographer Genevieve Ma'yet launches a double-debut: the cosmic "Penumbra" exhibition and her first children's book, "The Girl Who Found Her North Star."

What secrets lie in the soft shadow between our world and the stars?

This December 5th, The Hybrid Gallery invites you to step into Penumbra, a new photographic journey by Genevieve Ma'yet. She has captured the hidden thread that links the vastness of deep space to the intimate beauty of our planet.

But the images are only the beginning. Additionally, Genevieve unveils another secret: her first children's book, “The Girl Who Found Her North Star.”

"Each photograph is a journey, an invitation to ponder the cosmic dust from which we came and find awe in the unseen and wonder in the familiar," says Genevieve.

A Photographer Who Sees No Boundaries

Genevieve’s art was born between two worlds. Her great-grandmother lent her a painter's eye, while her heart was always lost in the stars. Told she had to choose between art and science, she simply refused, forging her own path to turn the poetry of the cosmos into a powerful visual conversation.

"This art is my answer to the 'what ifs' of the universe," Ma'yet explains. "It is a quest to capture the unknown, fueled by the quiet wonder of knowing that as we look out into the void, perhaps, some entity is looking back."

Inspiring All Ages

Penumbra captures light that has traveled for eons, offering viewers a visceral connection to the "star stuff" from which we are all made. "We are not just observers of the universe, we are the universe," says Genevieve. "When you look at these nebulas and galaxies, you are seeing the birthplace of our own cosmic ingredients."

Her debut children's book, The Girl Who Found Her North Star, follows young Aurora and her dog Sirius on a homemade rocket adventure to reach Polaris. When Aurora's tummy flutters "like a trapped butterfly," she must overcome her fears with courage and curiosity, discovering scientific marvels along the way.

"This is more than a children's book; it's an invitation to explore the unknown," Genevieve shares. "I turn foundational scientific concepts into thrilling adventures that are both accessible and inspiring."
