Mend is a neighborhood-grown theatrical spell for dismantling empire. With the power of multidisciplinary art, song, whim and ritual, this anti-capitalist dramatic comedy invites us to dismantle empire and dream new worlds into being.
We are a group of queer, multigenerational neighbors and local artists who have come together to create a 100% DIY, volunteer community play! We’ve been collaborating over the past 10 months to vision and shape a theatrical spell to plant seeds for a liberated future.
Our playwright/ Director Jack (Anna) Jackson has guided us on this journey of honoring and protecting our creative selves and vision, building confidence to express more boldly and courageously. They have built the sets, made the costumes and created all the projections in addition to organizing and facilitating the experience.
Mend is intended to break the 4th wall in moments and gently bring the audience into the multi-sensory world we have built. Here we model community organizing strategies, resilience, resistance and connection. This work illustrates the necessity of community in our collective struggle: We mend us!
Our play runs for about 2 hours with a 15 minute intermission. We have props, costumes, projections, shadow puppets and live music. All ages are welcome, though parents should be advised that it does grapple with concepts of genocide, corporate greed and police brutality.
We have tabling to provide resources on the topics covered, fundraising resources as well as merch and other artistic offerings from the cast. We hope this project will lead to community building and relationships that last far beyond the extent of this production.
We’re excited to share this project with our wider community and would be honored to receive your support and attendance!
