Compost chemistry
Composting methods, including hot, cold, sheet, trench, Bokashi and worm bin composting
Organisms in the compost
The environmental impact of solid waste
Trends and issues of commercial compost
Love Food not Waste.
Hands-on experience with various types of aerobic composting
Applications are available at the OSU Lane County Extension office at 996 Jefferson Street, Eugene, as well as online.

After training, Compost Specialists must volunteer 20 hours of compost-related activities to become certified. These hours, which include teaching others about composting, also count towards your Master Gardener volunteer hour commitment. Non-Master Gardeners may also become Compost Specialists. Refer to the registration form for details.

Cost: $30.00 
Includes: Compost Specialist Manual and supplemental materials. (After training, volunteer must complete 20 hours of compost-related activities to become certified.)

When: April 28 and May 5, 2026, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm

Where: OSU Extension Service, Lane County, 996 Jefferson St., Eugene

Prerequisites: Participants will have assigned reading prior to the training. Compost Specialist Training Manuals can be emailed to you or picked up at the OSU Extension Service–Lane County office a week prior to class.

Pre-Register: In person, online or by mail (996 Jefferson St., Eugene, OR). Pre-paid registrations must be received by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2026. No walk-ins.
