- **Event Description**: Discover the research focused on how the outdoors nourishes our minds!About this EventPlease join us for our in-town, indoor lecture series!Three researchers from Florida Gulf Coast University’s (FGCU) Master of Science in Environmental Science program will present work examining the relationship between natural environments and human well-being across diverse populations and settings. The panel will include studies on the mental health benefits of campus greenspaces, the well-being effects of immersive “wet walk” experiences, and how individuals who have relocated to Southwest Florida connect with nature, develop a sense of place, and how these experiences relate to environmental stewardship and well-being. Together, these projects highlight the diverse ways natural environments can support psychological health, promote restoration, and strengthen human–nature connections.Vania Azevedo is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Environmental Science program at FGCU, where she previously earned her bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She studies the restorative qualities of nature-based experiences, with a particular focus on wet walk experiences and their impact on student well-being. She also works at the university as a Colloquium Campus Naturalist and formerly served as an Environmental Education Intern at CREW Land &amp; Water Trust.Grace Norvell is a Master of Science graduate student at FGCU with a research focus on the human dimensions of the natural world. She has a background inenvironmental science, psychology, andpolitical science, and ample experienceworking in environmental education and interpretation roles. She is currently employed as a kayak nature guide and camp counselor on Captiva Island and has plans to expand her research in a future PhD program.Sarah Shelley is a graduate student in FGCU's environmental science program. Her research focuses on how residents who relocate to Florida develop a uniquely Floridian sense of place through environmental engagement and nature connection.
