The first day will present an introduction on grasses with classroom and practical sessions. The second day will introduce the UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) with the basic features being explained.Day 1Grasses occur throughout a wide range of British habitats and in particular sites they can form the bulk of the vegetation of a site, therefore accurate identification is essential to correctly survey a site for management purposes. Day 1 of the course will explore the distinguishing characteristics of grasses, sedges and rushes and enable participants to identify common grasses. Identification keys will be introduced, and participants will be encouraged to make their own voucher specimens. The course will include classroom sessions as well as visits into the woodmeadow to enable participants to become familiar with the diagnostic features and terminology that is peculiar to these plants. Diagnostic characteristics are often small, so participants will be able to become confident in the use of hand lenses. Participants will be presented with collected samples and both flowering and vegetative keys will be used to give greater flexibility when identifying species through the year. Grasses are a large and complex family and the onus will be placed on enabling participants to be able to go away with the necessary knowledge and confidence to continue to develop their skills independently, in the habitats with which they are familiar.Day 2Day 2 will start formally within the classroom before moving into the woodmeadow and nearby habitats to discuss what habitats are, and the features used to differentiate between habitat types. The UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) will be introduced with a focus on ecosystems and broad habitats in the Primary Habitat hierarchy. Examples of common habitats will be shown with explanations of their main features. The UKHab (Professional Edition) hierarchical structure and coding will be discussed. Mapping protocols within QGIS including use of polygon, line and point features are explained. Students will undertake some simple habitat identification and mapping on screen using the coding system and Field Key within the classroom. The relationship between UKHab and the Biodiversity Net Gain metric will be discussed. There will also be tea, coffee and biscuits served during the day.
