Main Characters

Jo March (17–20) A fiery, headstrong tomboy with a vivid imagination and a burning ambition to
become a famous writer. Her family, especially her sisters, means everything to her. She’s
fiercely independent and often clashes with social conventions.

Josephine March (40–50) The older, wiser version of Jo, a successful author who reflects on
her past to tell the story of her family and the experiences that inspired her writing.

Meg March (18–21) The eldest and most responsible sister. She takes her role seriously and
often tries to instill proper behavior in Jo. Meg is kind-hearted and romantic, and her desire for a
family of her own leads her to be the first to marry. (This character has stage intimacy with John
Brooke.)

Beth March (12–15) A gentle and shy soul who loves music. She is the peacemaker of the
family, adored by all her sisters for her sweet nature. The ability to play piano is a plus.

Amy March (10–12, Act One) The youngest March daughter. She is a bit spoiled and vain but
has a strong artistic spirit. She dreams of becoming a refined lady and a celebrated artist.

Amy March (15–17, Act Two) Now a young woman, Amy continues to pursue her art and her
goal of becoming a sophisticated lady. She is more poised and refined but still has a
mischievous streak. (This character has stage intimacy with Laurie.)

Marmee (40–50) The warm, loving matriarch of the March family. She is the emotional center of
the home—a woman with a caring heart and an unwavering spirit. She gives tirelessly of herself
to care for everyone around her.

Laurie (Theodore Laurence) (16–20) The wealthy, charming, and playful grandson of the
Marches’ neighbor. He quickly becomes Jo’s best friend and an honorary member of the March
family. (This character has stage intimacy with Amy.)

Supporting Characters

Aunt March (50–70) A wealthy, critical, and proper spinster. She can be quite demanding and
loves to complain, but her tough exterior hides a genuine care for the March girls, which she
shows in her own peculiar way.

Hannah (50–60) The March family’s beloved housekeeper. She is more family than employee
and serves as a second mother to the girls. She is loyal, practical, and a steadfast presence in
their lives.

Mr. March (40–50) The patriarch of the family. He is a good man who lost the family business
and now serves as a chaplain in the Civil War. He is too old to enlist as a soldier but serves his
country with dignity.

John Brooke (20–22) Laurie’s kind and gentle tutor. He is well-educated but not wealthy and
falls deeply in love with Meg. (This character has stage intimacy with Meg.)

Mr. Laurence (50–70) The March family’s wealthy and often reserved neighbor. He is initially a
private man, but his soft spot for Beth and the arrival of his grandson, Laurie, bring him closer to
the March family.

Professor Bhaer (30–40) A brilliant and gentle German professor whom Jo meets in New York.
He is a lover of literature and becomes a trusted confidant to Jo.

Mrs. Kirke (40+) Jo’s lively and kind-hearted landlady in New York.
