German band AnnenMayKantereit rose to success in the mid-2010s while blending streetwise indie folk with rhythm-heavy rock and peppering their distinctive sound with additional instruments like melodica, harmonica, and accordion. Singing in German with occasional lyrics in English and even Spanish, their early D.I.Y. success helped them land a major-label deal with Universal, which released their chart-topping second album, Alles Nix Konkretes, in 2016. Subsequent albums Schlagschatten (2018) and 12 (2020) were both Top Five hits at home, and they even crossed over onto the U.K. singles chart with a 2022 cover of Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner." AnnenMayKantereit returned to the top of the German charts with their 2023 album, Es Ist Abend und Wir Sitzen bei Mir.
