In early June 1967, Bud Cook had his orders for Vietnam.
That summer began with the promise of Bud, his family and his friends to write to each other. Throughout the following 365 days, they kept that promise.
No one could have imagined those letters would be kept and re-read all these years later. While preparing the letters for publication, Bud’s younger sister, author Dolores Cook Raisch, added the needed perspective and context, in order to create a journey of the written kind to a year frozen in time.
To Vietnam and Back 1967-1968 is a warmly told family memoir, narrating a year of wartime letters through the lens of a thirteen-year-old girl whose brother was drafted into the Army and sent to Vietnam during a turbulent time and pivotal period in our nation’s history. This book of back and forth letters illustrates the impact and value of family, friends, faith and love to those who served and to those missing them back home.
In addition to past, present and future generations of the Cook family, the book is dedicated to all those who never made it home from Vietnam. It is hoped it will not only honor those who served, but will educate others to never forget.
Dolores Cook Raisch is a retired educator who spends as much time as possible at the shore and is a frequent volunteer at the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum.
