Miguel started his career in North County San Diego and is widely recognized as one of its original organic farmers. There, he played a pivotal role in converting conventional groves such as citrus and avocados into organic groves. As a grower, Miguel’s unique gift was the ability to identify nutritious fruits, vegetables, and herbs and discover new ways to farm them in the most nutrient-dense way. During his career, he originated the first baby lettuce spring mix and created the Honeylope (half honeydew, half cantaloupe). He also farmed native corn, avocado, melons, quinoa, oats, chia, dates, garlic, and seasonal vegetables. After many years of traditional organic farming, Miguel found his true calling as building a collaboration with indigenous communities, helping them re-establish their culture, tradition, and economy, through the production of organic native corn. As a result, he formed Xanini, a coalition of 89 indigenous corn growers that brought together over ~1,000 acres of Organic Certified Native Corn. He was a passionate advocate of permaculture and indigenous farming and battled to keep Monsanto’s pesticides and genetically modified crops off of indigenous land.
