- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 03 May, 2026 at 09:00 am – Sun, 03 May, 2026 at 11:00 am (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Join an MDIFW wildlife biologist for a forest walk to Hancock Pond and learn how the land is managed for wildlife.About this EventJoin an MDIFW wildlife biologist at Hancock Pond at Fahi Wildlife Management Area (WMA). We'll pass through mix of mature softwood forest, mixed hardwood, and areas of recent selective and strip cuts and see the pond's edge. The property was also historically a cider orchard, and remnant stone foundations and wells are visible throughout. This is a great conversation about how landscapes change over time and how MDIFW stewards them for wildlife. The walk will focus on this WMA's habitat management story, including selective cuts, early successional habitat, and future woodcock and grouse management plans. Enjoy spring songbird and warbler watching, and identify tracks and scat along the trail.**Registration is requiredAbout Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs)Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife manages more than 69 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) across the state. The mission and purpose of the State-owned WMAs is to provide a statewide, ecologically based system of land holdings for the protection and enhancement of important wildlife habitats that also provide opportunities for all types of public recreation, where those forms of recreation do not unduly impact the wildlife resources. For more information visit www.mefishwildlife.com/wmaTrail DetailsThis will be about a moderate, two mile walk round trip starting at the parking area down to the Hancock Pond boat launch (one mile each way). We believe a healthy ecosystem makes life better for all the fish, wildlife, and people who call Maine home, as well as for the visitors who call it Vacationland. While MDIFW is a state agency, our work is funded by sportsmen and outdoorspeople. Our revenue comes through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses/permits, boat, snowmobile, and ATV registrations, as well as taxes on hunting and fishing gear. The more people who actively enjoy Maine's natural resources, the more ability we have to enhance, preserve, and protect them for the future.Basically, we're all in this together. Biologists. Game wardens. Educators. And you – the hunters, fishermen, and everyday adventurers who support our work. For recreation, for hunting, for fishing, for science, or just for fun: we're all in for the Maine outdoors."
