About the event

Portage Land Storytelling Events
Every community is built on stories: the tales passed down, the moments remembered, the myths that give us meaning. This season, Ely welcomes Portage Land Storytelling, a monthly gathering at the Vermilion Fine Arts Theater, 1900 East Camp Street.

Each evening begins at 4:30 PM with a 30-minute workshop to help you shape your story, followed by a 5:00 PM storytelling session where you will have up to five minutes to take the mic. Share your voice, or simply come and listen. Every session will also be recorded for a podcast episode, giving participants the chance to share their story with an even wider community.

Season Schedule
October 21: Gathering Tales
Stories begin at home in family traditions and in the myths we carry. This night explores the stories that anchor us and shape our identity.
Workshop: Myth to Memory — transform a family story or local legend into a vivid, shareable narrative.

November 18: At the Threshold
Every story has a turning point. This evening is about choices, crossings, and the moments when life demands change.
Workshop: Pivotal Moments — practice building tension and drama around one key decision or shift.

December 16: Fireside Stories
In the heart of winter, stories warm us like a fire. We will focus on connection, tradition, and the memories that hold communities together.
Workshop: Setting the Scene — learn how to use sensory detail to place your listener right in the middle of your memory.

January 20: Into the Wild
Every adventure begins with a step into the unknown. This night celebrates awe, risk, and discovery in untamed spaces.
Workshop: Risk and Reward — craft a story where surprise, challenge, or wonder drives the journey.

February 24: Ties That Bind
Bonds of friendship, family, and community endure across time. This theme invites stories of resilience, loyalty, and what holds us together.
Workshop: Objects of Connection — use a personal object as the anchor for telling a deeper story about human connection.

March 10: Turning the Page
Endings open into beginnings. This night is about transformation, renewal, and the stories that mark life’s next chapter.
Workshop: The Art of Ending — shape a narrative arc that lands with resonance, closure, and possibility.
