Mead is one of the oldest fermented beverages in the world—crafted for thousands of years from just honey, water, and yeast—yet it’s experiencing a modern revival as both an art and a science. What makes mead truly special is how dramatically flavor can shift based on the honey varietal, the yeast, and even the water—transforming a simple recipe into something deeply expressive and personal. If you’ve ever wanted to create your own mead but didn’t know where to start, this class will give you the confidence to begin.

In this hands-on introductory class, students will explore the history of mead, taste a range of honey varietals, and learn how core ingredients shape the final product. We will cover essential equipment, sanitation, and fermentation basics, including how to use a hydrometer and avoid common beginner mistakes. Students will walk away with a clear understanding of the mead-making process and the skills needed to confidently start their first batch at home.  

All students will get to sample some meads in class. Those that select the "take home kit" at registration will also leave with a package of mead yeast, a glass gallon fermenter, an airlock and bung, and a hydrometer to concoct their own one gallon batch! Please note that mead is an alcoholic beverage; students must be 21 or older to participate in this class.
