Since 1621
It began with a harvest. In the autumn of 1621, the Plymouth colonists and their Wampanoag neighbours shared three days of food in a good year. Nobody called it Thanksgiving then. It took two more centuries, a determined editor and a president in the middle of a war to turn it into the day we know: a Thursday in November for family, food and being grateful.
Most of what fills the day now came later. The parade, the football, the morning Turkey Trot and the long table of sides were added by one generation after another, which is why every family’s Thanksgiving looks a little different.
Thanksgiving events in Elon College run from Nov 4 to Nov 29, 2026: 53 events.
8 events are listed for Thursday, November 26, including Five Before the Feast. HP’s annual Turkey Trot at Downtown High Point, Thanksgiving Feast and GRIT Turkey Trot 5k.
9 dinners, brunches and buffets are listed, including Diabetes & Thanksgiving - Brunch & Learn at AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina - Greensboro Wellness & Opportunity Center, Grandover Thanksgiving Dinner To Go and Thanksgiving at Passion. Tables go early for the holiday, so book ahead where you can.
Yes: Turkey Trot - Barrel Race at Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center (Sat, Nov 21), Five Before the Feast. HP’s annual Turkey Trot at Downtown High Point (Thu, Nov 26) and GRIT Turkey Trot 5k (Thu, Nov 26).
Thanksgiving Food Drive 🦃, Thankful Thursday with Second Harvest Food Bank and Feeding the 500 at Restoration @ The Rock 501 Kirkland Street, Greensboro, NC, US are looking for helping hands.
Yes: 6 of the 53 listed are free, including Diabetes & Thanksgiving - Brunch & Learn at AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina - Greensboro Wellness & Opportunity Center, Fall Harvest Festival at Epworth United Methodist Church and THE UNOFFICIAL OFFICE THANKSGIVING TRIVIA | Chubby’s Tacos Durham at Chubby's Tacos. Tickets for the rest run from $5.31 to $514.56.
The most popular on AllEvents right now are Greensboro Gobbler 5K - 26th Annual Turkey Trot at Center City Park at Greensboro Downtown Parks, Inc. (Thu, Nov 26), 3rd Thursdays Thanksgiving Party at Barber Park Event Center (Thu, Nov 19) and THE UNOFFICIAL OFFICE THANKSGIVING TRIVIA | Chubby’s Tacos Durham at Chubby's Tacos (Wed, Nov 11).
Yes: 8 more events are listed within reach, in Raleigh, Durham, Garner and Greensboro.
In the United States, Thursday, November 26, 2026 — always the fourth Thursday of November. Canada celebrates earlier, on Monday, October 12, the second Monday of October.
A Thanksgiving meal shared with friends rather than family, usually on a day near the holiday. Many restaurants and bars host Friendsgiving dinners and parties, so you can skip the cooking.
Yes, as early as you can. Restaurants serving a Thanksgiving menu often fill up a week or more ahead, and many offer a set menu at fixed seatings on the day.
