Open‑grown landscape trees often develop weak or poorly formed branch architecture. These patterns can lead to limb failures, which not only harm the tree but also increase risk to nearby homes, vehicles, infrastructure, and people. Thoughtful, well‑timed pruning early in a tree’s life creates stronger, better‑shaped trees that are also more resilient during storms.

After a short indoor learning session, the class will head outside to apply these principles and demonstrate proper pruning techniques on one of the Arboretum’s trees.
